P002 → TO REST

To Rest is conceived as a retreat, nestled within the rolling hills, surrounded by wildlife, and offering a view of Marvão Castle. The structure emerges from the landscape, standing distinct amidst the trees as a solitary, whitewashed house. Its silhouette is defined by chimneys characteristic of the Alentejo region, which punctuate the form and cast sculptural shadows. This interplay of light and shadow evokes a visual language reminiscent of Robert Ryman’s minimalist works, imbuing the architecture with a serene, contemplative quality.

The spatial plan draws from local typologies, abandoning corridors and conventional circulation in favor of a continuous sequence of rooms, akin to the Viennese Raumplan. A subtle shadow line defines the first floor, creating a sense of groundedness, as if the house is anchored to the earth, much like the surrounding rocks and trees, which are treated as integral elements of the architectural composition.
